History
In 1945, Paul Dunbar decided to leave Dupont and start a business. His wife worked with a lady whose husband owned a bike shop. Paul worked with him for about a year and took over the business. Dunbar’s Cyclery at 908 French Street was born. Dunbar’s remained at that location until 1965 when the business moved to 401 Philadelphia Pike.
Since 1946, Dunbar’s Cyclery has served Wilmington, Delaware cyclists with top quality bikes and cycling gear at the best prices. Dunbar’s has experience that can’t be matched by the newer shops. Today’s core staff include Skip Dunbar, Rich Schoonmaker, and Wendy Dunbar. Rich, Dunbar’s top mechanic, started working at the store in 1968. When Skip (Paul’s son) finished college, he joined the business and they decided to open a new, bigger store at 801 Philadelphia Pike. Together, Paul, Skip and Rich designed the building and built the high-wheeler that hangs on the building today. The new, and current store, opened in 1976.
